Sennheiser BF 812
By RickD on 04/29/2008 at 00:02 Serious about music, want to make it your profession.

Characteristics
- What type of microphone? (live, recording, mixed...)
This is designed for live vocals. You could use it for other applications, of course. In fact you might want to cos from my experience this picks up feedback rather easily!

- What technology? (electret, condenser...)
Dynamic.

Has a very handy on-off switch, very good for stopping feedback... ;-)

Subjective bandwidth was not very extensive.
Overall Opinion
- For how long have you been using it?
I had this for a year or two and sold it.
I had an SM58 too for a while, can't remember if it was after or before, though.

- What thing do you like most/least about it?
It looks & sounds better than an SM58, plus it has an on-off switch...plus it's not an SM58, and i don't like having the same stuff as other people, ha!

BUT one day i was doing the sound for a singer-pianist on a boat and when we swapped his SM58 for this, it was feedback heaven. So we quickly switched back to the 58.

- Did you try many other models before getting this one?
I own or (have) use(d): AKG C3000, XML 90, Rode NT3, M-Audio Sputnik, AKG D5, Shure SM58, Shure SM57, ATM33.

- What is your opinion about the value for the price?
The sound was fine for the price, but i didn't have good experience live (too much feedback...maybe i was doing something wrong, who knows...try it & see) and the sound was no good for studio work. In parallel i used a C3000 for that, so i wasn't going to find much satisfaction in this...

- Knowing what you know now, would you make the same choice?...
Well, i sold it...so, no.
Would i go for an SM58? Nope.
So what then? I bought an AKG D5 the other day. The feedback killer they call it...will try it out in a few days...we'll see.

Sennheiser HD-565 Ovation
By RickD on 04/16/2008 at 17:19 Serious about music, want to make it your profession.

Overall Opinion
I've had this for about 6 or 7 years.

This pair of headphones is open, despite appearances: if you look carefully you can see all the little holes on each side. So forget about using this for recording, this is purely for listening. You can hear all that's going on around you and people around you can hear the music, even when listening at low volume.

I've had the Audio Technica ATHM-40, a closed pair made for tracking but they were no good for mixing or anything, really, so i sold them and now i'm using this for mixing or for checking mixes, and i have a cheap pair of Sennheiser HD-201's for tracking: they're closed enough and although they're rubbish they're more reliable soundwise than the ATHM-40! I shudder to think that i paid £75 for those... :-|
Have tried the Sony 7506 and compared to this they're rubbish. Of course, they are closed too so you don't use them for the same applications, but i've never heard better phones than these. They were £130 when they came out (200 €) so you'd expect them to be quite good...

I paid a lot less (£70) so i'd say the value is good. Yes, i would definitely buy them again.

They are extremely comfortable...to the point that you forget you're even wearing them!
The sound is never tiring, always detailed & precise, very airy. It's a pleasure to listen with these, but your source better be perfect or else...

The only thing i can think of that i don't like about these is the slight lack of bass. But as long as you know you shouldn't add any bass in your mix, then you're ok. You can hear anything that's going wrong with these.

Overall, an EXCELLENT pair of phones. If you come across something as good as this but closed then please drop me a line! Everything else i've tried has let me down...

Sennheiser E 604
By moosers on 03/25/2008 at 00:36 Music is your Profession.

Characteristics
I've only used my Sennheiser e604 on tom drums in the studio, but I could certainly see them being used live because of the convenient clip. Since it is a dynamic mic they would probably work on guitar amps and snare drums as well.
Overall Opinion
I've had my Sennheiser e604 for about a year now. My favorite part about it is that it has a clip that you can easily mount on to a drum. Although if I had the money I would prefer to have another Sennesier 421, this really does the trick on tom drums, making for a very full sound at a pretty reasonable price. I would use this on a tom drum over a Shure SM57 just because it is easier to set up, but if I had extra 421s I would definitely use those, however, until I can afford to upgrade, the e604 definitely does the job I need it to.

Sennheiser e609 silver
By moosers on 03/25/2008 at 00:28 Music is your Profession.

Characteristics
The Sennheiser e609 is a great dynamic mic for recording guitar amps both in a studio and live setting, as I have used it in both. I put it right up against the speaker and it comes out great most of the time (of course depending on the amp, guitar, player, etc).
Overall Opinion
I've had this mic for about 3 or 4 years now and although I don't use it as much as I used to but it is still a great option for recording guitar amps and I love having it in my arensel. Compared to a Shure SM57, it has a pretty similar sound to me, and I do prefer the Sennheiser 421 on guitar amps over the e609. However, for the price this is a great mic to have around. Although they say it is also great on toms, I could never get the right sound with this over a tom tom and it was a bit hard to place on it. Overall I would definitely recommend this mic to someone who is interested in having a new option for guitar amps, but I would also recommend having a Shure SM57 and a Sennheiser 421 to compare it with.

Sennheiser MD 421 II
By moosers on 03/24/2008 at 17:51 Music is your Profession.

Characteristics
I've used my Sennhesier MD 421 II only in the studio and mostly on tom drums and guitars. These are classic dynamic mics and I've seen very few studios without them. Although I have only used them in the studio myself, I have heard they are also great in a live setting on any application that a dynamic is traditionally used on, especially on vocals (as seen in the Concert of Bangladesh).
Overall Opinion
I've had my 421 for about a year, the thing I like most about it is its versatility. I have one of them and I always use it on the the floor tom as they capture the low end of that really well I feel. I also always use these on guitar amps, they are my mic of choice for that, along with an SM57/ I love having the roll off knob to adjust between musical and speech applications. To me, its one of the best dynamic mics out there and although it is a bit pricey for a dynamic mic, no serious studio should be without one. If I were to lose or break mine, I would certainly purchase another.
